Governor's Move To Reduce Ballot Drop-Off Spots Only Hurts Texas Voters

Today, Governor Abbott issued a proclamation directing counties to designate just one location for ballot drop-offs, a move that Texas Progressive Action Network strongly opposes.

He is also allowing political parties to install poll watchers to observe the process.

Reducing ballot drop-off locations down to just one per county will disproportionately impact some Texas voters who reside in counties with a considerably larger population.

Harris County, for example, spans 1,777 square miles and has a population larger than that of some states.

“It’s hard to overstate how unnecessarily difficult this will make voting for some Texans, all at a time when we are still very much in the middle of a pandemic and should be making voting as safe and as hassle free as possible. Voting is not supposed to be burdensome.” - Valerie Street, President of TPAN

While barriers to the ballot box may unfortunately continue to present themselves all across the country right up until Election Day, we too will persist in fighting for the right to vote.
Through the Our Vote Texas project we will continue to send out nonpartisan voter rights materials for the many volunteers doing voter outreach work all across Texas and we will continue to protect our vote.
